Lionel Messi and Dani Alves capitalised on the sending off of Martin Demichelis as Barcelona left Manchester City's Champions League hopes in tatters at the Etihad Stadium.
Messi dusted himself down to score from the spot on 54 minutes after being brought down by Demichelis, who was red carded for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.
Xavi and Dani Alves both missed presentable chances to double the advantage of the visitors - who also had a goal harshly disallowed for offside - before Alves slipped the ball under Joe Hart to double their lead.
