Mesut Ozil has reportedly spoken to police over an incident in which a photographer sustained injuries after being hit by a car.The Arsenal creative midfielder, who was left out of Arsene Wenger's squad to face Sunderland on Saturday, is said to have been driving the vehicle just one night before the Gunners' 4-1 win. Metropolitan Police released a statement, as reported by Sami Mokbel of the Daily Mail:
Police were called at approximately 7.18pm on Friday 21 February to reports of an alleged collision between a vehicle and a member of the public. The member of the public, a man in his 30s, sustained minor injuries. Officers have spoken to the driver of the vehicle.
No arrests have been made thus far, and certainly no guilt has been determined on the part of Ozil, but Mokbel's report adds to an increasingly disappointing spell in North London for the German star.

Wenger gave an official explanation for Ozil's absence against Sunderland, telling Sky Sports he had a thigh injury.Of course, alternative assumptions were drawn that Ozil was left out of Wenger's squad after a string of poor performances. The former Real Madrid playmaker made a huge impact upon his £42.5 million arrival in the summer, but has suffered indifferent form since the turn of the year.

This culminated with his missed penalty in the Champions League round of 16 first leg against Bayern Munich. Ozil's halfhearted attempt straight down the middle was easily saved by childhood friend Manuel Neuer, whose strong hand thrust the European titleholders toward a 2-0 victory at the Emirates.Mathieu Flamini was seen screaming at his teammate during the game, but claimed "it was just about communication," as reported by ESPN.

Despite scoring four goals and contributing eight assists to Arsenal's charge for this season's Premier League title, per WhoScored.com, the 25-year-old has underperformed in a number of big games for the Gunners. He was completely anonymous in both matches with Manchester United, particularly at Old Trafford, and failed to exert his passing influence against a midfield that has struggled for form this campaign.

Ozil made two costly errors in the 5-1 hammering away at Liverpool and lacked the guile to overcome a combative Reds midfield of Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson, often leaving his team exposed at the back. OptaJoe highlights his sudden loss of form:

While Ozil certainly needs a rest heading into a busy month, the club-record signing must quickly get used to dealing with tremendous pressure. His transfer fee and reputation ensures he is expected to perform at the highest level each week. Although the well-travelled player should be afforded time to adjust, he quickly needs a consistent run of form to hush the critics.
